Adrien: Learning to Cope with Shopping-Free September

It's going to hit me in stages, I think. The first few days I'm going to be all smug and superior about how I don't need or want anything. I have everything I could possibly need right in my closet!  But as the holiday weekend approaches I'll feel the grief-spiral sneaking up on me. The stages thus:

1. Denial – It's AUTUMN. I need FALL THINGS even though it's still 95 degrees out. Boots! Tights! Sweaters! THIIINGS! I NEEEEEED THINGS.

2. Anger – I CAN'T READ THE BLOGS. THOSE SMUG BLOG GIRLS BOUGHT STUFF I WANT. HATEY HATE. HAAATE.

3. Bargaining – Maybe... if I sell some things on eBay I could maybe use that money to buy that Anthro top that finally went on sale? That's not even buying, right? It's more like exchanging. Right? right?

4. Depression – No lunchtime mall trips. No Marshalls. No eBay. No blogs. No reading internets. No online sales. No 40% off coupon usage. Sadness. Despair.

5. Acceptance – Fine. Yes! I'll just be at home hyper-cleaning the shower grout with an old toothbrush and then maybe I'll knit myself a pair of over-the-knee boots after I learn how to knit and then I'll make cookies I can't eat and then I'll GIVE HUGS TO ALL MY CATS. Yay! Cats love hugs!

I'M FINE. WHY DO YOU ASK?

  1. Oh lord, I hear you. Stay strong though! In a few months you'll have forgotten about most of the pretties you want now and the fall stuff will be on sale. So YOU'LL be the smug one laughing at our now-useless sale purchases as we cry that we don't have enough money to buy fall stuff.

  2. Roxy, I am hanging in there! But I swear to God if the Masked Stripes Cardigan goes on sale before October I'm going to Hulk out on that store.

  3. I tried a shopping free January a few years ago. I was on a streak where I was buying way to much and wearing things only once. The ban was pure torture, so I feel your pain. If you ever do it again, give yourself a limit of items that way you search for the "perfect one" rather than feeling deprived.
Personally, I love to see you make multiple outfits from your closet! It gives me ideas and inspiration of how to make more from less! Thanks for the great blog - I really love reading it!

  4. I'm going to give the shopping ban a try too. I *almost* bought some stuff from Ann Taylor this morning b/c they offered me 25% off already discounted merchandise, but the shipping was $10!! I felt very virtuous when I emptied my cart.

Hang in there! You can doooeeet!
