Reader question: Non-Diaper Diaper Bags

Reader Carolyn writes:

I was wondering if you could suggest some stylish yet affordable (less than $250?) tote / hobo bags that could double as a diaper bag? I'm about to have my first baby and I prefer not to have to go all babiesrus and buy an "official" diaper bag.

Ah, diaper bags. A topic I feel strongly about, especially right now. I am kind of against actual diaper bags, and much prefer my own set up, which is as follows:

Large waxed canvas tote (I am IN LOVE with this one for under $80), with a leather pouch inside for my stuff (mine is very similar to this one for under $40), and a Baggu backpack tucked in with the baby stuff. I love the Baggu bags because they add zero weight and I can pull it out and carry it on its own if I need to.

So, that said, here are three of my favorite affordable totes (in addition to the canvas one I linked to above) that I think would work well as diaper bags.

You can't beat a classic Longchamp Le Pliage, it's easy to clean nylon, and it zips closed.

This Charles Jourdan bag is sleek and sophisticated, and the perforations make the leather more lightweight. I also like that it has a long strap so you can wear it cross-body. Plus it's on major sale for under $140!

If your style is a bit more rugged or casual, I adore this Leibskind Palermo Canvas Tote. I'd carry this, diapers or not.

I'll be back next week with some more diaper bag/baby style talk, but what do you guys think about these?

  1. I bought a diaper bag from Pottery Barn when I was maybe 4 months pregnant; it was on clearance, looked like a useful black tote with a monogram on the front. I used it maybe once. Karl got a Diaper Dude as a gift and we never used it except when Emerson went to my mom's for the day but the older she got, the more I loved that Diaper Dude. Emerson is out of diapers but we still use it because it's so brilliantly designed and SAHD Karl isn't embarrassed to carry it around.

But when E was a baby... a gallon Ziploc was my buddy - in it would be a diaper, wipes, change of clothes and maybe an extra pacifier and I could easily switch it with my purse for the day. :)
