Marianne: The Ouidad Haircut - is it worth it?

Y'all know my hair has been driving me nuts lately, I was constantly bouncing between products and ended up wearing it up most of the time. The biggest issue was I hadn't had it cut since...February. I know. So anyway, when I found out a nearby salon (Belleza for you local folks) had a Ouidad trained stylist, I had to try it. And YOU GUYS LOOK AT MY HAIR LOOK AT IT:

I am not exaggerating when I say my curls have never looked this good. Ever. Now, this was the most expensive haircut I've ever gotten in my life, twice as much as I'm used to paying, but she recommended I only get it cut 4x a year and I am SOLD. I am just beyond happy. Not only did she spend two hours meticulously shaping each individual curl, she showed me exactly what products to use and how to style it. And honestly, after having a baby and struggling with losing the baby weight, it's nice to have great looking hair and feel a little bit pampered.
Gabrielle, the stylist, used a diffuser, so my curls are extra bouncy and perfect. I let them air dry and they still look good, though. Want to know what products she used? First she washed with the Clear & Gentle shampoo. It is a low lather shampoo and she thought it would take care of my sensitive scalp, and she's right. For conditioner she used the Curl Quencher Conditioner. I loved her reasoning: it's the most concentrated so you use less, but it's the same price as the lighter conditioners. More for your money! I love her. She also recommended I deep condition once a month with the 12 Minute Deep Conditioning Treatment.
Now on to products. She started with a generous portion of Ouidad Whipped Curls Daily Conditioner and Styling Primer. This stuff smells amazing and felt great in my hair. Then she combed in some Heat & Humidity Gel, a product I already use and adore. This is a magic gel that somehow isn't crunchy and holds down frizz. While she was styling the curls (which was kind of an amazing process), she stopped regularly to spray on some Styling Mist Setting & Holding Spray. This might be my favorite new product, it holds the defined curls, adds shine, and helps your hair dry a little faster.

And that's it! Okay, it's a lot but the whole process only adds about 10 minutes to my haircare routine and I only wash my hair twice a week. It stays looking great into the fourth day and my curls have never looked so great, even in the summer humidity. Clearly I am back on the Ouidad train hardcore and I've already booked my next appointment for November. Have any of my curly friends had an Ouidad cut before?

  1. I feel like your curly haired stalker, but OMG your hair looks amazing. And I just looked up Oiudad salons near me. The haircut is SO EXPENSIVE but I haven't gotten it cut in two years since my hairstylist moved and I had a traumatizing experience with a straight-haired stylist.

This may have to happen. Your hair looks amazing.

  2. It looks lovely and it really inspires me to try to cater to my wavyish/frizzy hair.

  3. Fabulous! I'm impressed that you only have to wash your hair twice a week! What do you do the other days? Your curls look ok after you sleep?

  4. Super cute! I have just moved back to North Mississippi, so I am soaking up any and all reccs you have for taming frizz.

Love your shoes. I am a big fan of yellow shoes.

  6. Yay! Thanks for the info. Your hair looks great Marianne. I can't wait to try some of these products. The only one I've tried so far is the Curl Quencher conditioner. But I will be purchasing the rest this weekend! I'm also curious too, what you do the other days you don't wash your hair? I wash every other day and sometimes I want to wash it every day. Did the stylist talk about that at all? I've never deep conditioned either, but I may have to after today! As you know, I am a recent Deva Curl convert but I am intrigued by the Ouidad experience and will look for it maybe next :) Regardless it looks great and I'm so glad you had a great experience!

  8. Another Curly stalker...I mean lurker, and I might just have to cheat on my stylist and try the Ouidad nearest me. Thank god I got a bonus today. Your curls (and you) look amazing.

  9. Oh wow. Now I want to betray my stylist to find an Ouidad one! I've tried their products, and I didn't love them, though... they sort of weighed my curls down, and I hate looking greasy. Yours doesn't look like that at all.

So does that mean you condition your hair every day, though? I need to shower every day because I work out and get gross, but I don't shampoo every day because it dries my hair out... but I do get my hair wet and condition every day.

  10. Your hair looks amazing. Never had a ouidAd, thought seriously about a devachan cut but that hasn't happened yet either.

  11. My daughters go to a Deva salon and while they allegedly "hate" their curls (one has wavy curls, the other would have curl curls if she took care of them), nevertheless, amazing cuts every time. I was not blessed with curls (stick straight until first pregnancy but that is a different story) but when I got my hair cut there, a Deva cut, my own regular stylist thought I had gotten a perm! They just find the waves and maximize them with their cuts. I am sticking with Deva for my daughters (expensive enough for 13 year olds) but definitely advocate going to a curl-specializing salon! Your hair looks amazing!

  12. Alright, perfect timing. I'm so exasperated with my hair. It looks So.Blah, and nothing seems to help anymore. I used to have this beautiful mane of curly hair- compliments by passers-by, the whole works. No more; it has No shine, No shape, frizz...I don't even want to try products anymore because they work a couple times, then don't...I refuse any longer to spend a fortune cluttering up my bathroom for nothing.
I also- ok, this is a bit neurotic, I realize- hate going to the hairdresser, so I just don't go anymore. My hair is long, and so I just trim the ends whenever I feel they need it. The only thing I like about hairdresser is the hair-washing part. I hate the rest. When I read your post I thought "I probably hate it because I never seem to get a hairdresser who "gets" my hair! So this is probably it! A curly specialist!!!"
It sounds like either Deva (from Margaret's comments) or Ouidad would do the trick.
OK, so first, my questions for you: when your hairdresser did all the "curl forming"- what did she do, and do you have to reproduce it every time? Because I know that I can finger-twirl my hair and it makes a big difference, but I don't always have the patience (and it doesn't always stay- but that's lack of product, I imagine)
Also- I do a lot of sports/dance (pretty much every day) and I wear my hair in a sock bun; I don't wash it every time; I can't, my hair would dry out too much, but I wash "the edges" (everything that frames my face). Would that kind of wear and tear work with the sort of hair regime you have, do you think?
Thanks so much for the post/review. And you look great, btw! Your hair, obviously, but also your little outfit- adorable!
Right! I'm off to hunt out a Ouidad or Deva hairdresser!
