Marianne: Tarte Amazonian Clay 12- Hour Foundation Review

So! In my last post, I mentioned that I am using a new foundation that is so amazing, it makes my skin look airbrushed. Like so:

Now, lest you think my skin has improved or something, let me assure you it has not. My chin is a broken out wasteland and my skin in general is blotchy from lack of sleep and general winter ennui. What? Skin ennui is a thing.

And so, even though I am still a big fan of the Smashbox Studio Skin 15-hour foundation, I decided to give Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 hour full-coverage foundation (that's a mouthful) a go. And y'all, it's amazing, full stop. Two things of note--it's thick. Like...THICK. A little bit goes a long way. And you must, MUST apply it with a foundation brush to get that buffed, airbrushed, flawless coverage. You don't need an expensive brush, I use this $8 one and it's fantastic. But you have to use a brush. I wear the Fair-Light Honey shade, btw.

It's cracking me up that in a couple of months I've gone from tinted moisturizer to foundation to full-coverage foundation, but what are you going to do? What do y'all use? Anyone else made the plunge to full coverage foundation? And do you use a brush to apply it? Spill.

  1. Hi, I was curious about this foundation. How does it wear during the day? Does it cake because it's so thick? I have pretty dry skin especially in the winter so I'm wondering how this would last during the day. Love your blog, you guys make me laugh out loud at my desk sometimes :)

    Thanks :)

    1. Hi Noelle! It wears great during the day. It doesn't cake when applied with the brush (I know I keeping harping on it), you get a really thin layer of coverage and you can build where you need more. I put on a pretty heavy moisturizer first in the winter time.

  2. i still just use spot concealer and a little powder to set it, though I do have a lightly tinted BB cream I sometimes use, and have liked MACs sheer foundation with spf for times when I'm extra unthrilled with my face. Mostly, I don't want to get into foundation because a) I hate feeling like I have stuff on my face and b) my cheeks are already rosey. If I cover them up, do I then need to re-rosify with blush and so on? Seems counterproductive and way too involved for my 2 minute routine. I am, at essence, both lazy and unskilled.

    1. It only takes me about 5-8 minutes to do my makeup, depending on how much time I spend on my eyes, but I definitely don't blame you for wanting to do the bare minimum! I think if I didn't have to be on camera for my job I would probably wear a lot less makeup.

  4. That looks interesting...I use mainly Asian BB creams- but they tend to be higher coverage I think. Holika Holika, and Sana Keana Pore Putty Pact- which does give an airbrushed look. I use a Beauty Blender, which I have just discoverd and CANNOT believe I haven't been using. It gives you a flawless complexion.

Following some blogger raves, I tried the Fit Me Shine Free stick- I use it on T-zone (swipe it on then Beauty Blender boing it in) and where I think I need it after my BB (concealer etc) It's a great finish, and your skin feels like velvet, I'm loving it

  5. I've just been using a MAC liquid foundation applied with a sponge. The photo headshot posted looks AMAZING, and now I am desperate to try out both the Tarte production and a brush. Must get a brush!

    1. Forgot to add: I really, really like my MAC foundation; it gives good, nice, even coverage and is flattering. No complaints here.

  6. I only use Bobbi Brown foundation and yes, for the love of GOD, foundation should be applied with a brush.
    ps, you're so pretty.

  7. I use that foundation when I'm feeling fancy. It's pretty magical. For most days I use Tarte Amazonian clay BB cream or whatever they call it. I love both products. Before I found Tarte I would buy something different every time and was always on the search for a good foundation. Now the search is over. I'm a convert.

  8. I feel like foundation with some coverage is the only thing that stays on my skin, so I mostly bypass all the "sheer"/BB cream stuff. I wear Urban Decay Naked Skin. I use UD's brush (I got some deal online buying it) but have used a good ELF brush from Target with it too. Good stuff, it makes my skin look great and STAYS PUT all day, which is vital when one starts her day at 5:30 a.m.
