Weekend Window Shopping: Snow Boots.
My good friend Ashley lives in Chicago and asked me if I could help her find a cute pair of snow boots. Her Sorel Joan of Arctics are destroying her feet so badly she's resorted to wearing her Hunter rain boots instead, which are waterproof and comfortable but aren't warm at all. She requested they be "real boots that are cute, warm as hell, and don't weigh 30 pounds. My commute involves walking, lots of train platform stairs, etc."

I have an older version of those first Uggs and they are WONDERFUL. Waterproof, warm, comfortable, non-hideous.
ReplyDeleteI'm so bummed to hear the bad news about the Joan of arctics. I too live in Chicago and am looking for a cute, warm (preferablywaterproof) boot, and was looking at the Sorel ones.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the other Sorel styles are more comfy?
Another one to consider is the Pikolinos Le Mans tall quilted waterproof boot. It's actually on sale at Von Maur.
The end all, be all of snow boots are Valenkis. I got mine from Russia for like $80 10 years ago and they're still perfect. I do not exaggerate when I say that my feet have never been cold or wet when I've worn them in the snow. Ever. Basically they're magic. They have some on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Russian-traditional-winter-felt-boots-VALENKI-GRAY-/181298361947?pt=US_Women_s_Shoes&hash=item2a3639765b
ReplyDeleteI live in Chicago too and have the Ugg Belclouds. Love love them.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say it but Valenkis seem to be the Crocs of snowboots. I am sure they will catch on as Crocs did :-)
ReplyDeleteI have Valenkis and while they are fascinating to look at they are impossible to do city walking in and terrible on stairs.
ReplyDeleteLa Canadienne (sp?) makes gorgeous waterproof and warm boots. They aren't cheap but there are deals to be had if you shop around.
I live in Utah and personally love my Sorel Fancy Lace Up boots. They are incredibly warm, not too heavy, have great traction, and don't look as gigantic as other Sorels.

DeleteI forgot the link!
For my first winter in Ohio I bought a pair of Timberland's Mount Hope boots in the grey/olive color. They are super comfortable and keep my feet warm and dry. I wanted a pair of boots that I'd be eager to wear day after day through the long slog of winter, and that's exactly what I got.

One of the other blogs I love did I slightly different take on this that I enjoyed: http://www.aintnomomjeans.com/2014/01/shopping-chic-snow-gear-for-mamas-who-love-to-play-outside.html
ReplyDeleteGreat comments and recommendations, you guys! Thanks for all the info.
ReplyDeleteThese survived three years in Ithaca NY and then two horribly cold ones in Virginia. I live in Cali now but they are still great for cold, rainy days.
