Weekend Window Shopping: The Magic Dress.

My search has begun! I've started looking for this year's version the magical casual dress I can wear all summer long. It has to be washable, comfortable, adorable, and can't require a strapless bra. Also, it shouldn't be too expensive. Here's what I've found so far:

  1. Love the Boden dress. I hate spending that much for a summer dress, the fit would have to be spot-on. I've got high hopes for the two Old Navy dresses (especially the sleeveless shift, which I hope is a version of one of their last summer dresses that I LOVED). Hopefully my local Target has that wrap dress, because it'd be a great last-minute outfit for Easter with a chunky necklace.

    1. Boden isn't cheap but the quality is really good! I'm tempted by that one too.

    2. I can't say enough good things about Boden. Their clothing is really well made, so it should last you for several summers to come! Plus - stripes!!!

  3. May I nominate this Old Navy dress? I just bought the navy print one and LOVE it. It meets all your criteria, plus it's great for nursing. It's only $10 now, so I might get another. http://m.oldnavy.gap.com/product.html?dn=op953051012&pdn=search

  4. I found a magic dress last summer- at H&M. Not only that, it was on sale. It's made of (not too clingy) jersey, sleeveless, a bit of sheer (high though- collar bone and shoulder straps), and about 3 inches of sheer at the hem. So flattering. And get this- it has an elastic waist that is always slimming- even those days when your waist is deciding to go a bit thick on you.
I can't even tell you how many compliments I get on that dress- always from chic, expensively dressed women, AND men. The women almost look miffed when I tell them where it's from, and then scurry off to get themselves one. (it honestly looks like a Calvin Klein or something) I don't know if they came out with it again this year, but I think it was one of their "basics"-keep your eyes peeled.. And- get this- originally sold at a whopping $17. I got it on sale for $10. And you betcha I bought back-ups. I have 4 black, and 4 navy.
It's as simple as simple can be- throw it on over your head, and voila presto, you have accomplished the almost-impossible: you are effortlessly chic. And yes, it can literally go from thrown-over-your-bathing-suit to pearl earrings, heels and a silk shawl etc, and it looks totally appropriate at both, and everything in the middle. OK, rave over, but yeah, just great.
Otherwise, if you're interested in an adorable and wearable maxi summer dress, Gap has this colorblock thing that is likewise, super comfortable, super flattering, and super simple (if more colorful)
I tried on a bunch of dresses at Old Navy but the waists are always weird and bunchy and just kill the whole thing. Way too bad because there are some seriously nice fabrics, upper torso cuts and patterns.

  6. I bought the Old Navy shift dress in the navy print and it's so cute. A teeny bit short for me maybe, but a word of warning, order one size down! I may have to get it in red too. The Loft and Boden ones look like really nice options, I will check those out.
