Stuff We Like: Products and Whatnot

I'll be doing a regular "stuff I like" post soon but thought it would be fun to do a beauty product version with a few new products I've been enjoying. Also, a question/horrifying photo at the end. Yay.

I know I've been mentioning RMS Beauty Living Luminizer a lot lately but I really just love it a ton. It's not a long-wearing product but applied correctly and with a light touch it will give you a very natural lit-from-within look. It's lovely! (Just fair warning - it's made with coconut oil so if you're reactive to that ingredient it might break you out.) I have heard good things about the RMS Eye Polish too but my lids are already so oily that I don't know if it's for me. Has anyone tried it?

Heres a surprise: Sephora Collection Cheek Ink Gel is really damn good! I bought it as a filler item to get free shipping on my last order and I'm delighted to report that it's a very good cheek gel color. It's on sale right now for $7 so it's dirt cheap to boot. I got the color Lotus to try and replicate Benetint and I think I got it right. I will warn you - a little goes a long way. Don't layer it on too aggressively or you'll get to work and realize you look like a crazy blush clown under the florescent lighting. Um.

One to watch: dpHUE ACV Rinse. I first heard about this product on an episode of Fat Mascara and was immediately excited because this is EXACTLY WHAT I NEED. I get my color done in intense deep reds and then watch it go down the drain because my hair is not the kind of hair you can shampoo only once a week. I bought some ACV Rinse immediately and have used it once and liked it, but the true test will come after my next color appointment.  (Also, Justin Anderson, who created this product, looks like this. IT DOESN'T HURT, IS ALL I'M SAYING.)

Marianne pick:
I have a thing I like this week! I have been wearing Schmidt's Rose and Vanilla natural deodorant for a few weeks now and I feel confident in declaring that it is great. It's slightly sticky at first and the texture is kind of weirdly gritty, but it smells lovely and has yet to let me down. Will it stand up to a southern summer? Probably not, but even if I go back to regular antiperspirant for a few months I'm dramatically reducing my exposure. Also, it's cheap and readily available at Target and WalMart so yay.

Back to Adrien:
Here's the whatnot part of this entry with a question I've been meaning to ask for a while:

This is from last summer. Woe.

Remember last summer when I thought I had rosacea? I went to the dermatologist and she thought so too. I had crazy flushed (and sometimes hot, bumpy and swollen - see above) cheeks and once or twice my whole face was affected. This happened on and off for two months and I couldn't figure out a specific trigger, though heat/sun would make it worse. Then it went away completely. Poof. Gone. Soooo...for those of you with rosacea, does this happen or was I having a long-term allergic reaction to a product? I'm going back to my dermatologist next month but thought I'd see what your experiences have been. And sorry about the horrifying photo - that's not even the worst one.

  1. I have a reaction like that to BHA. I can do lactic acid, AHA, and Vitamin C, but I can't do BHA.

    1. Interesting. I don't think I was using BHA last summer but I have discovered that some chemical exfoliants make me break out in little red bumps. (See: P50)

  2. RMS Eye Polish in Seduce is my every day go-to eye color (when I wear eye color at all). It's super easy, just smudge it on, and you can build the color a bit. I actually don't know if my eye lids are oily or not, so I am guessing maybe they aren't? Anyway, I like it, sometimes I use it almost like a primer to layer on another powder color, it's pretty user friendly and lasts FOREVER. I have had the same pot for 9 months and there is a ton left.

    1. Duh! I don't know why I didn't think to ask you.

  3. I'm on my 3rd RMS highlighter! I love it. Also, a few weeks a go at Anthropologie I was digging through their sale stuff and I came upon an RMS set of 3 shades of highlighter in a dinged-up box that was priced to SELL! So now I guess I'm highlighted for life.

  4. I have rosacea and I haven’t looked like that. I just get splotchy , sometimes with tiny spots that look like zits. Tres sexy . :/
Sun,wine , and spicy foods exacerbate my rosacea.

    1. I definitely had some days with tiny red spots on my cheeks and some less terrible days where I was splotchy but not crazy red and swollen. That pic is one of the terrible days.

  5. I have a long history with sensitive skin and I think it looks like a reaction to some product, maybe even something on your hair since your hair brushes your face. Or hand lotion if you tend to touch your face a lot, or sunscreen. Heat/sun can intensify a reaction, but rosacea doesn't usually disappear.

  6. I agree...I have rosacea and it's not nice but it doesn't look like that. That looks, to me, like a reaction. Have fun figuring it out!

    1. It stopped last August and I think I might have narrowed down the product that caused it.

  7. Another rosacea sufferer who thinks that looks like a reaction and not rosacea. It DOES look like what happened to when i went in the sun with AHA lotion on my face. I hope it was an isolated incident for you.

    1. No, it was on and off for two solid months! Thanks though, for confirming what I suspected.

  8. Have you ever considered henna for you hair instead of color? It oxidizes (it will change color a bit, starting out orange and get redder over the first few days) but it does not fade. You can cut it with Cassia to get lighter shade. If you use pure henna (or cassia) you can highlight it. I only color when the grays grow out. Gray tunns copper and stays copper. It makes hair super shiny. I am more auburn and have been using it for 9ish years.

    1. Ha, I was big into henna in high school and OMG what a mess. It stains everything! I am happy with my colorist, I just want to keep the color bright a bit longer.

  9. I do have rosacea, and your picture looks like a very bad flare-up I had two years ago that was triggered by sun and heat. (It was so bad that after a month, I had to go on a course of steroids. I also had to change all my beauty products and still only use physical sunblock. It's a long story.) Anyway, your dermatologist knows better than I, but that could well be rosacea exacerbated by a reaction.

    1. Thanks! My only confusion is that my skin went back to being completely normal in August and I haven't had any flushing or redness since then.

  10. I’ve been battling perioral dermatitis for a couple years now, on and off, and my new derm just gave me some ivermectin cream (Soolantra) that is supposed to kill skin mites and is also used to treat rosacea. Apparently these mites can make your skin very sensitive and cause pustules and redness. I had something like what you have going on in that pic on and off last summer, from like May till July. It started with a bad reaction to doxycycline, which I was taking to treat PD. I ended up taking fluconazole for a very long time and that actually cleared both my PD and the red rashy face, which made my primary care doc think it was yeast related. My skin was perfectly clear until recently, when the PD came back. Anyway, I sought out a new derm recently (old one was useless and possibly got me into this mess by prescribing a super strong regimen that I think messed up my skin barrier) and she didn’t think any of that was from yeast. She thinks it’s all mites. Anyway who knows but in the meantime it does seem to be working!

  11. I’d guess that it was a reaction to sunscreen or some other summer only product. I had a similar issue and it tools YEARS to figure out the exact source. Doing a product test on your inner arm could help you identify the issue and/or allergy testing. Good luck!!

    1. I wear sunscreen every day of the year, so I don't think that was the culprit. I think it might have been a moisturizer with active ingredients that was causing the problems and the sun/heat made things worse.

  12. Rosacea is an all year thing. Even though you use sunscreen all year, it could still be the sunscreen. I've had a problem with sunscreen that manifests like this. Sunscreens with avobenzone or oxybenzone essentially give me a chemical burn. My dermatologist said that some allergies to products are triggered by the sun. So you may be ok with the sunscreen on a daily basis but it triggers a bad reaction when you're out in the sun longer.

    1. Oh, that's really interesting! I had no idea. I can't remember which sunscreen I was using last summer (I rotate through several - some are chemical, some chemical/physical combos) but I'll have to keep an eye on that when summer comes and maybe switch to an all-physical sunscreen. Thanks so much for the info!

  13. I think you made need to wait through another summer to really know about your skin. I have rosacea and it's definitely worse in the summer (or anytime I'm in the sun, but living in Portland that's pretty much just the summer). I also have very reactive skin and will get reactions from chemical sunscreens, as others have mentioned. Good luck figuring it out!
