Shopping Report: I'm Returning Everything.

I know I spend a lot of time on this blog enabling all of you to buy things but please know I also enable myself and I make mistakes. Lots of them. I've been home sick for what feels like a month now, so pair that with a ton of good sales and I've definitely made some online purchases. It's alllll going back. (But never fear, some of it hasn't yet arrived so there's a good chance I'll keep that stuff. Who knows? Anything can happen!) Let's start with The Dress:

Oh yeah, hi there cute little Madewell dress, thanks for following me around the internet until I caved and bought you. You arrived stuffed in a plastic envelope, a mess of wrinkles, poor thing. I steamed you and tried you on and hahahahaha:

This is not my dress. I know I should be able to wear whatever I want at 50, but y'all, not this. It's so cute but makes me feel like I'm wearing a floofy costume. It does have pockets? That's a bonus for sure but it's still not my dress.

Also, not mine: those big buckle Birkenstock Arizona sandals I'm wearing. I bought them after much deliberation and I kept pulling them out and trying them on and putting them back in the box. If you do this with any pair of shoes for more than a couple of days, return them immediately. They are very pretty but the buckles make them HEAVY and the leather on this pair feels really stiff. They just aren't for me. I'm going to return them and have already ordered this pair in black/white to fill the Birkenstock-shaped hole in my heart.

Also returning a pair of Birkenstock EVA sandals in red which I bought to wear at the beach and then realized I'd only be at the beach for a week and don't need an entire other pair of $50 sandals for a one week trip. (If I had regular access to a pool or other body of water, I'd probably keep them.)

And finally, I'm returning these Madewell cut-offs which I'd hoped would be long enough if I uncuffed them but they absolutely are not. (I also ordered this pair but they haven't shipped yet. I look forward to returning them next month, I guess.)

  1. you're not alone. i have a small pile of items from j.crew and madewell that i need to return. 2 dresses, a skirt and a pair of very see-thru light colored pants.

  2. I bought a suit from BR Factory with a great jacket and pencil skirt and I kept trying it on and taking it back off. It went back, too, so the same is true not just for shoes. If you're still looking for shorts, I bought these from Old Navy and LOVE THEM. They were exactly what I was looking for in a denim short this summer: https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=802954002&pcid=999&vid=1&&searchText=denim%20shorts#pdp-page-content

    1. I see that those shorts are out of stock in just about every size, but they go in and out of stock pretty regularly.

  3. Maybe Anthropologie has different colors, but you can usually get those EVA Birks at Dick's for $40 (if that makes a difference - I want to return the favor of enabling ;-) )

  4. Ha, you did a public service by buying and modeling that dress! I was curious but I can see those sleeves would swallow me.

  5. I was so curious about that Madewell dress too—even though I know I don’t ever have good luck with their dresses. Thanks for your honest review! I hate to say this but I think Madewell dresses skew too young for me (others may have better luck & we should certainly wear what we want); that style may be the real issue for me. Anyway, I don’t want to make you buy more but I own a pair of the EVA birks & don’t live near any water, but I love them! They are great for wearing around the house, out in the yard, etc. I do plan to take them along on a beach trip later this summer too. I think they’ll be more stable than regular flip flops.

    1. I've been thinking lately that most of the clothes at Madewell feel to young for me! I love the denim and accessories but the dresses are all prairie floof and feel very young. And y'all are starting to change my mind about the EVA Birks...

    2. I still like their jeans too, although I’ve had some from J Crew in the past year or 2 that I like better, probably because they have more of a mid-rise. I have never had much luck with Madewell dresses, but I turned 50 this year, and yeah, the ruffles, tiers, & prairie looks are not for me. If you get the EVA’s, I hope you’ll enjoy them!

    3. Yes! There was a period of time where Madewell dresses were perfect for me (pre-prairie floof) and I keep hoping they will return to that.

  6. It's good to know you also make errors! I would consider keeping the Eva's for everyday wear around the house as I enjoy wearing my Eva knockoffs even to work as a teacher and they are nice and spongy.

  7. The EVA birks are my favorite of my 3 pairs of birks. They are so lightweight, and so good for PNW springs and falls when it's warm enough to forego socks, but might rain. They can get muddy, sandy, wet, etc and you can hose them off. I've had mine for 3 years and they are still going strong. LOVE.

  8. Target's EVA birk dupes are so good. I just cannot pay $50 for plastic sandals. But $10? And some of them are floral? Yes please!

Another one who can't wear Madewell dresses. I loaded up a cart during the sale last weekend but couldn't justify it in the end. I did buy a bunch of randomness from BR Factory, though. Eep!
